About this formulation

Ayurveda explains most digestive complaints through two ideas. The first is aggravation of the doshasvata, pitta and kapha. The second is ama, the residue left behind when food is not fully digested. Seasonal change, repetitive diet, dust and pollution all encourage ama to build up and adhere to the tissues, where it is understood to clog the shrotas, the channels through which nutrition and oxygen reach the tissues and waste leaves them. Digespan Tablet combines twelve classical digestives and mild eliminatives in a 600 mg tablet intended to keep that residue moving rather than settling.

The herbs, and why they are here

Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) — the largest ingredient at 125 mg. Its tannins and chebulic acid make it a gentle, non-griping laxative, traditionally used for constipation and for toning the colon.

Triphala — the classical three-fruit combination, among the most widely documented ayurvedic preparations for colon cleansing and for digestion generally.

Trikatu — ginger, long pepper and black pepper together. Trikatu is warming and carminative, used where there is loss of appetite, belching, nausea, flatulence or a sense of gastric distension, and it improves the penetration of the other herbs.

Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi) — carries thymol-rich essential oil, which gives the seed its aroma and is associated with increased activity of the digestive enzymes of the intestinal tract.

Sunthee (Zingiber officinale) — dry ginger, rich in proteolytic enzyme activity and associated with increased bile production. Its shogaol and gingerol constituents account for its traditional antiemetic use.

Baelgarbha (Aegle marmelos) — bael fruit pulp, containing alkaloids traditionally used to protect the intestinal flora and support properly formed stools.

Indrajav and Kutaj (Holarrhena antidysenterica) — seed and bark of the same plant, with antidysenteric, antidiarrhoeal and anti-amoebic properties recorded in classical use, including for irritable bowel and liver complaints.

Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica) — a strong digestive stimulant, used traditionally in dyspepsia, colic and vitiated conditions of vata and kapha.

Methi (Trigonella foenum-graecum) — rich in dietary fibre and a well-established anti-inflammatory herb in ayurvedic practice.

Amlavetas (Garcinia pedunculata) and Hing (Ferula narthex) — an astringent laxative and a classical antispasmodic resin, completing the formulation.
