About this formulation
Herbal Hair Oil is prepared by the traditional sneha paka procedure, in which herbs are simmered into a fixed oil base until their fat-soluble constituents transfer into the oil and the water fraction has cooked off. The base is 60 ml of sesame oil and 40 ml of coconut oil per 100 ml. The preparation is free from mineral oil.
The base oils and herbs, and why they are here
Til oil (Sesamum indicum) — sesame oil forms a protective film along the hair shaft that offers some shielding from sun and pollution, and its antibacterial and antifungal character is the traditional basis for its use where dandruff is a concern.
Coconut oil (Cocos nucifera) — penetrates readily into the follicle, supports scalp condition, and is long used to limit breakage and split ends while adding shine and softness.
Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) — the best known hair herb in ayurveda, also valued as a liver tonic, and applied to the scalp to support hair growth and natural colour.
Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) — amla, a rich natural source of vitamin C and a strong antioxidant, traditionally used to strengthen hair follicles and delay premature greying.
Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) — included for its calming effect on the nerves and its traditional association with circulation at the scalp.
Jaswand (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) and Kamal (Nelumbo nucifera) — cooling herbs for the scalp, used traditionally to soothe and condition and to support growth in thinning patches.
Nagarmotha (Cyperus scariosus) — a standard inclusion in ayurvedic hair preparations, it works at the hair root and on the sebaceous glands of the scalp.
Mehendi (Lawsonia alba) — henna, used traditionally to balance the pH of the scalp and to address the dryness and flaking that often accompany hair loss.
Methi (Trigonella foenum-graecum) — fenugreek contains lecithin and is used traditionally to soften and cleanse the hair and to limit hair fall.
