About this formulation

The liver carries much of the body’s routine work of processing what is eaten, drunk and absorbed, and ayurvedic practice has a long-standing group of bitter and cooling drugs used to support it. Livo Tablet gathers nine of them, including one classical bhasma, into a single 425 mg coated tablet. The formulation is weighted toward Arjuna bark and Kalmegh, with the remaining herbs supporting digestion, appetite and elimination.

The herbs, and why they are here

Arjunchhal (Terminalia arjuna) — arjuna bark, advocated in ayurveda as a liver tonic and traditionally associated with the regulation of cholesterol and LDL levels.

Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata) — the king of bitters. It is used to help clear accumulated toxins from the liver, and its alkaloids are associated with the regeneration of liver tissue.

Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) — one of the most widely used herbs in this category, applied where the liver has been burdened by alcohol, excess fat or an accumulated toxin load.

Bhumi Amla (Phyllanthus niruri) — a small ground-growing herb used throughout India in liver formulations, associated with antioxidant activity and with raising glutathione and vitamin C levels in the tissues.

Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa) — the name means that which renews. It is used to revitalise and cleanse the liver, and is traditionally given where infection has left a person fatigued and sluggish, or where anaemia and poor appetite accompany a slow liver.

Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica) — a warming digestive herb, used as a liver tonic and to support normal liver functioning.

Kadu (Picrorhiza kurroa) — a bitter Himalayan root, traditionally associated with normal blood glucose, serum lipid and blood urea nitrogen levels.

Pippali (Piper longum) — long pepper, rejuvenative in classical practice, used to improve appetite and to increase the bioavailability of the herbs it is combined with.

Mandoor Bhasma — a classical iron preparation, used in ayurveda where liver sluggishness is accompanied by anaemia, and traditionally described as helping normalise bilirubin levels.
