About this formulation
Orthopan Oil is an external application prepared by the classical sneha paka method, in which herbs are processed into a sesame oil base over controlled heat so that their fat-soluble constituents carry into the oil. The finished preparation combines that herb-processed base with two classical ayurvedic oils, Mahanarayan and Mahavishgarbha, and a group of volatile oils that give it a warming, penetrating character on application.
The oils and herbs, and why they are here
Til oil (Sesamum indicum) — sesame oil makes up just under half the preparation. It is the standard oil base in ayurveda, traditionally described as nourishing to skin, bone and nerve tissue, and it carries the herbal and volatile fractions into the skin.
Mahanarayan oil — a classical polyherbal oil long used as an external analgesic for sore muscles and for stiffness in the joints and spine.
Mahavishgarbha oil — a second classical preparation, traditionally used to balance vata dosha, to support the body’s own clearing of accumulated toxins and to support healthy joints.
Gandhapura oil (Gaultheria fragrantissima) and Gandhabiroja (Pinus roxburghii) — wintergreen and turpentine-type oils, both associated in traditional practice with a local analgesic and anti-inflammatory action.
Kapur (Cinnamomum camphora), Phudina (Mentha piperita) and Nilgiri (Eucalyptus globulus) — the volatile fraction. Camphor, mint and eucalyptus give the characteristic warming and then cooling sensation on the skin and help the heavier oils spread over a large area.
Dashmool, Nirgundi (Vitex negundo) and Sallaki (Boswellia serrata) — the sneha paka dravya, processed into the base oil rather than blended in afterwards. Nirgundi and Sallaki, Indian frankincense, are two of the herbs most widely used in ayurveda where joint comfort is the concern.
